The Athenaeum is a beautifully preserved building, now serving as an art gallery. One of only two remaining examples of Neoclassical Greek Revival architecture in Alexandria, its exterior features an impressive portico supported by soaring Doric columns. Oversized windows bring natural light to the main gallery rooms, which boast 24-foot ceilings, wonderful woodwork, and exposed granite walls lined with rotating art exhibits. Your ceremony can be held in the sweet, private courtyard. This quaint, romantic space has a “secret garden” feel, sheltered from the street by high, vine-covered red brick walls.

Please note wheelchair access is available only on the main floor.

A/V equipment is available but limited.

Rates, Fees, Availability & Facility Capacity:

Rates: Monday-Thursday: $275/hour

Friday & Sunday: $445/hour

Saturday: $545/hour

Federal Holidays: $600/hour*

*Federal Holidays: (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays bounding any of the following holidays are subject to the Federal Holiday rate: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day).*

A minimum of 4-6 hours per rental is required.

Fees: Renters must obtain a $100 NVFAA membership and pay a one-time payment $150.00 cleaning fee. This does not include any fees associated for parking permits, and VA ABC Licenses.

The Athenaeum organizes art exhibitions that change roughly every six weeks and is open to the public Thursday-Sunday, from 12-4 pm. Event rentals cannot occur during these times unless special permission is obtained first.

The Athenaeum is not available for rental on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
