Versatility
Keyboardist Kim Myers puts his heart and soul into each performance, and has been doing so since he was a boy. When he was about 9 years old, his mother and grandmother send him to “go pick the piano” while they sang hymns. “I would try to get the melodies, and after a while it would come to me,” he explained, describing how he first learned to play music.
A Connecticut native, Myers sang and played gospel throughout his youth at the Zion Baptist Church in Middletown. In those days, he was also a frequent performer at the old blues joints. “I told my parents I was going to the store to buy candy. I’d be gone for an hour and a half,” Myers said. The old gentlemen at the clubs would let him sit in and play the blues, and from that early experience he learned to fuse gospel and jazz together. “When I perform, I always add a little gospel twist—it reminds me of those times before they tore down all the old joints and replaced it with technology.”
Myers is the real deal—he may use a drum machine in his one-man shows, but he plays it live. In addition to a class act, you can expect Myers to cover jazz standards and modern blues popularized by artists such as Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra, James Brown, and Marvin Gaye as well as original songs and instrumentals inspired by issues of the day. (Hear selections of a partial list of songs in his repertoire Since versatility is Myers trademark, don’t be too surprised if you hear a tune from the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, or the Eagles, too.
Myers has performed around the United States and around the world, most recently completing a six-month engagement entertaining guests the five-star Dusit Resort in Dubai. For him, each performance is a journey, and he feels successful when audiences leave feeling better than when they came in. You can hear him in clubs and restaurants in New York and New England, or you can book him or his band to entertain at weddings, parties, bar mitzvahs, corporate events, benefits, fairs, festivals, and other venues that call for a touch of class from Mr. Versatility.
