As you have probably heard, planning a wedding can be a stressful experience. Some girls secretly plan their weddings years before the ‘knight in shining armour’ begs for their hand in marriage. Others, are reduced to a ‘deer in headlights’ reaction once the time comes to actually plan their event. Either way, get your pen and paper together and be prepared to plan one of your single most important events of your life. Today’s weddings have turned into enormous expenses – so take my advice and learn as much as you can before you dive into the shallow end of the pool.

We can thank movies and televised wedding shows for the popularity of all the extra services that are available to brides today. In doing some research I have found that there are more and more wedding and bridal associations available in local cities all over the country. Their primary purpose is to support and educate the brides utilizing their combined years of experience in the industry. In Memphis, we can thank a group of businesses that formed the Wedding and Events Association of Memphis (WEAM), they ounded in 2006. This is a non-profit organization that aims to educate Memphis-area brides, grooms and their families about the many costly mistakes they should avoid while planning their weddings. Association members bring years of experience and valuable expertise to the group and workshops with the goal of educating brides and grooms on how to plan for their big day. The best part about this group is that it is made up entirely of local businesses that have been in the wedding industry for many years. There is a member for nearly every component of the wedding planning process thus providing experienced advice for every aspect.

The BEST part, the Wedding and Events Association of Memphis hosts FREE wedding workshops every few months for engaged couples and their families to come and learn where to start, how to save money, and what to avoid. Workshops include cake tasting, samples of invitations, linens, catering, tuxedos, flowers, music, photography, bridal gown fashion shows, make-up demonstrations, information on bridal registry, honeymoons, setting up marital finances, door prizes, gift certificates, and many more.

These workshops are informative and create the perfect forum which can complement even the best wedding planner book yet provide live Q & A for the bride, groom and their families.

For information on the next free wedding workshop is on August 2, 2009, please call 901-550-7627 or 901-458-0923 or check out the website at www.weddingsandevents.org
