It sounds like you need the help of a wedding coordinator who can help you establish a budget and a timeline of tasks to be done as your wedding date approaches. With just a few months to go, a pro is going to be a great guide and will help you locate the best sites and vendors to book in such a short time, and then work with you to design your elements and make a menu, etc. Visit http://www.bridalassn.com to find a pro planner, or look at who the brides and grooms here on WeddingMapper hired near you to collect names of wedding coordinators that you will interview, and they’ll even help you plan budget wedding elements, too!
Good luck! You can do this, and it’s going to be wonderful. You just need an expert to take you step by step through the process, and you and your groom will plan everything wonderfully!

I think you run a risk of cheesiness with both bands and DJs. And I think if you’re trying to be cost-conscious, then a great / high-end DJ is probably better than a less-expensive band. But we are going to use a band (whom we actually heard about through a local message board here!). We are planning the wedding long-distance, but my parents have heard the band perform several times and loved them, and I liked the demo CD that they sent me.
Everyone loves live music, and a good band can play nearly as much variety as a DJ — maybe not everything, but at least a really wide range that will please both the older and younger guests. I’ll admit that I’ve preferred the bands to the DJs at every single wedding I’ve attended over the years.

I have been a wedding photographer for over20 years and have come across some really good bands and DJ’s as well. From what I have seen, bands do not m.c. a wedding very well. A wedding DJ – not a DJ for a party or a dance, but a wedding DJ that lets you pick out the types of music to be played is a good way to go. Announcements have to be made for the toast – cutting the cake – first & father daughter dance – garter & bouquet toss are announcements that’s right up the alley for a “wedding DJ”. On the other note 🙂 I have seen and heard some fantastic bands, just make sure you have an MC for the reception.
It’s all about what you have been thinking about and planning ever sense you were a girl.

If you’re considering a DJ it’s imperative that you see them in action. Contact them and ask when/where their next five gigs are, and show up unannounced. If they don’t want to allow you to come to an event, you don’t want to allow them the run your reception… I only recommend tasteful, yet interactive DJs to my clients. Trust me, I’ve seen my fill.

I was lucky enough to be photographer at a wedding with a live band, they were really good! They performed a variety of music and were so talented, they had an acoustic guitarist who played the procession during the ceremony too. It turned out beautiful.

The “cheesy DJ” worry is one that lots of people have, and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence to back that up. 15 years in the business and I can say that there two really easy ways to ensure that you don’t get that cheese. Be specific with your expectations and seek out a full time professional. Oh and be prepared to pay more than you might expect. A true pro devotes quite a bit of his time to your reception, has top notch equipment and stay on top of his music collection. All of that costs and those costs are directly reflected in the DJ’s rates. If you’re prepared to spend the money on a band look in to another class of DJ’s. You’ll appreciate the much broader range of music, but more importantly your guests will appreciate hearing their favorite songs the way they know them, not just a reasonable facsimile.

We’re going with a jazz band during the cocktail hour and dinner, and a DJ for the evening!! 🙂

I used the DJ Connection in Tulsa. DJ Eric is the man. He has DJ’d in Kansas, Missour, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico.. you get it. He was more of a Host then a DJ. They built a schedule with me and executed everything with utmost professionalism. My Dad likes them so much he is using them for His company Party.

Spend the money on a band. It’s worth it. I wish I had followed my instinct on that one but instead we got a second string DJ. boooo!! It wasn’t a total disaster, but I would have been happier with a band that I could have gone to see perform before hiring.

We had a string trio for the ceremony/cocktail hour then we did it ourselves with an ITunes playlist & speakers at dinner & after. We set up playlists beforehand, Best Man handled minor announcements, it worked out great. I hate DJs.

We are going with the DJ who I must say is awesome! Our DJ is also our coordinator’s husband! The DJ is needed, I think if we go with the band that will bore our family and friends after a while! We love to get on the dance floor to the latest R&B flavor and nobody can bring it like a DJ! check ours out @ http://www.djethemusicmaster.com!

Hi,
In the UK agencies push bands more than djs as they get more commission.
Best solution normally is
1, Band and DJ – the band may say they have a dj but this is usually the sound engineer or someone that makes the band look good.
2, DJ only – but make sure he is perfect for you and your guests
3, Band only -Its your special day you need entertainment right through the night if you cant afford both a band and dj book a dj.

Went with a band called Typical Hawaiians, they play at the Hilton Village on Thursday or Tuesday nights. you might think its cheesy to have Hawaiian music but everybody enjoyed it. They even manned an Ipod for special song requests they wouldn’t play.

Our DJ was AMAZING! I danced for 4 hours straight. He wasn’t cheesy, he didn’t play any cheesy songs (chicken dance etc), he didn’t talk a lot, and he mixed old school (think Jackson 5) with new songs (think Shakira Hips Don’t Lie). Our guests loved him too!

I’m pretty sure we’re going to go with a band. They’re definitely more expensive, but I’m a little worried that a DJ might be too cheesy…

What are you doing for entertainment during your wedding reception?
A live band, a DJ, your iPod and some speakers?
We did a live jazz band for the cocktail hour and dinner and then a DJ for after dinner/dancing. It worked out great!
Thanks!
